OUR GENESIS
PRPS is the brain child of Shri (Late) Somnath Chatterjee (Ex Member of Parliament and Speaker of the Lok Sabha) and the organization’s current General Secretary, Mr Kanti Ganguly.
Before PRPS, Dakshin Sahartali Pratibandhi Sammilani (DSPS) an organization for the disabled was formed. However, when the need for a larger forum to represent the entire disabled community in the State arose, PRPS was established in a Convention on Rights for Disabled in Kolkata in 1986.
It was decided that PRPS would collaborate with various stakeholders, particularly the government, to build an inclusive society by protecting the rights of disabled people.
PRPS’s primary mandate at the time was social recognition and economic rehabilitation. However, as new ideas emerged, PRPS evolved as well. PRPS is now one of the few large autonomous organizations that address all types of problems faced by disabled individuals.
